ok so not a real "oh no they didn't' post but discussion and question. so now looking around the internet i see a bunch if people in their outcrys about vaccinations for pets.

they are harmful, unnecessary and, just "no"

so, how does one care for and manage that life style? how does someone keep a dog without rabies shots? I can see raw diets but this 100% natural life, of raw whole animals and no vacciations.

do you get fined for not having your dog getting shots?
is it better to do that and feed them right? on a forum somewhere someone said their raw fed dogs never get sick and never need shots. if you watch them like helicopter parents i guess parvo and distemper and rabies aren't needed

are these people idiots or know their right stuff?

humans are sick and over vaccinated and we torture our dogs and cats with the same fate.

i guess if a cat lives indoors and your dog never gets out of your site offleash then they don't need to have them...

So I went visiting friends for a couple of days this week, and I come home and my cat is bawling. It's obvious that she's gotten no attention whatsoever, her litterbox is full, her water is brackish and she's got no food.

My boyfriend says that he fed her, but he gave her a can of wet food a day. This makes me angry because I picked up some wet food to supplement the dry food that he was supposed to pick up and apparently never did. So she's been getting ONE CAN of food a day.

Did I mention she's nursing? Her kittens are only three weeks old and they are sucking her dry. I told him she needed to be able to eat whenever the hell she wants, and he said that there was no reason for her to need to pig out like that.

SHE IS NURSING! She DOES need to eat whenever she wants, goddammit. She's skinnier than she was when I left and currently searching the room for some morsel of food.

Really fucking sucks when I thought I could depend on him for something as small as taking care of my cat and he can't even do that. Ugh. I'm getting food for her after I come home from work today, but I feel like a horrible pet owner for not being able to get her food now.

Edit: This is really the tip of the iceberg with the problems I'm having with him, and when I called him to ask WHY my cat was only getting one can of food a day, he said that I had told him to give her one. And I had, but following that was "...to supplement the dry food that you need to go pick up for her." But apparently I'd only told him to give her a can a day, so we ended up having a semi-serious conversation and I told him that as it stood, I didn't want to be with him anymore.

I can deal with taking things out on ME, but you do not get to pull innocents into the line of fire, especially not when one is my nursing mother cat and her kittens. So I'm done.

So, the Manx we picked up and have been caring for started cratering in the past couple of days. He ask (begged) a vet friend of our come in on Christmas Eve to give her a quick evaluation about what could have been wrong since she had been appearing to be getting better. She said that chances are, the Manx's liver or kidney's were failing. We couldn't get the cat anywhere to get care on Christmas but we managed to get her into the emergency vet's this morning.... but we didn't make it.

The Manx died last night. Even though she died way too young and led anything but a charmed life, at least she died being warm and cared for. ;.; We're happy enough that she got at least some level of comfort before passing on.

After we buried the manx, my mom and I called Animal services to see where we stood on taking care of the rest of these guy's animals since they haven't come to get any of them. We've been giving the dog food and water but the dog is still tied up outside with no shelter and this has been going on for over a week now, I think. Of course we got an answering machine when we called, so we hope they'll get back to us on Monday? Maybe? Hopefully? We have pictures and vet reports on the manx, and pictures of the dog the guy has tied up in his yard. The rest of this guy's cats LOOK fine, but we can't catch them to make sure. ;;;

What I still fail to understand is WHY this guy has these animals in the first place. If he's gone 90% of the time and admitted not getting care for them during his absences... whats the fucking point of owning animals?

It was deleted when I got to it, but I'm guessing the comments were saying how I'm feeling assuming that this person did indeed just go out and get a bloody MONTH old puppy and doesn't have the mother also. Did anyone see what went on in there?

FOUR WEEKS. I DON'T EVEN..

Edit: The pup's actually two months old. Seriously phew. I hope someone gave her some good info on toilet training and that her dad isn't serious about kicking the pup out.

Another edit:
Found this cap of the post and comments in sf_drama. She's not correcting people on the one month old part, so she may have lied to make the puppy seem older in the post before? The plot thickens!

Wow I'm really irked about that "Do you need to know about animals before you get one?" comment.

This isn't exactly about a stupid pet owner, but it is something that may influence the way people see their pets (and even worse, the way other people see pet owners).  I work part time at a small cat shelter as an adoption counselor slash cat caretaker.  This morning, my dad e-mailed me this news article.

Polluting pets: the devastating impact of man's best friend

After reading it through and boggling a bit at all the things wrong with it, I chose some of my favorite points and wrote an e-mail back.

A quick follow-up of this post. I picked up the cat from the vet's today and she is doing MUCH better. The vet told me that after he got her all cleaned up and and the antibiotics started working better, he was able to better see what could have caused the wounds. He said that one of the major ones was prolly caused be a dog or even a fight with another cat, but a majority of the blood and puss filled sores were from nothing more than neglect and severe malnutrition. I did finally get ahold of the owner of the cat and boy, did I get an earful. He was VERY upset I took his cat to the vet because "she would have just gotten better on her own." Uh... huh.... He was already upset so I went ahead and asked him if there was any chance he would reimburse me at least SOME for the vet visit (this is called fueling the fire.) Of course he declined, still insisting that the cat never needed to visit the vet in the first place. Yes... because we all know that cats walking around, covered in open wounds full of dirt, blood, and pus is a normal thing. I asked him about his other animals and about him being gone so often, leaving them all without any sort of care during his absences. His response was that the cats and dog fed themselves just fine while he was gone!! They catch and eat all sorts of birds and squirrels and there has never been a problem before. Uh... huh.... So now the cat is with me, and is looking for a new and better home. I am currently looking through the proper channels to get this guy charged with every form of animal abuse in the book. .___. I don't know how this guy could every think that ANY of this is okay.

I've seen people offer to trade their animal for something else, but a RUG?

Looking for a four foot round braided rug -good quality, no neon in exchange for a chocolate lab puppy. Long story, but true offer.

http://syracuse.craigslist.org/pet/1518245645.html

I'm pretty sure this is the same person who bought a chocolate lab puppy for someone for Christmas and then the person told him they changed their mind and didn't want a puppy. He's been trying to sell it on CL for some time now and the ads keep getting taken down.

---

Edit: Someone has posted this in response: Contact me regarding the rug for puppy. I have the perfect rug and will gladly exchange in order to protect the puppy and rehome it with intelligent owner(s).

I don't know if this is SPO or just plain sad... Prolly a lot of both.

I've been walking the neighborhood almost every night, looking for my missing cat (still no luck... sigh...) Last night while on patrol, a little manx started following me. At least... I thought it was a manx. It had no tail and from the look of the gaping and pussing wound on it's rump... it could have possibly had a tail not-too long ago. I instantly scooped it up and started knocking on doors. One resident told me that the cat belonged to a house on the corner, not very far away, but that the owner was gone on business 90% of the time so his three cats and dog were often left to fend for themselves. Greeeeeat.

I took the cat home and quarantined it off, away from my family's other pets. There was no open vet but I got the cat into our vet first thing this morning. The vet said the cat was a manx, so the lack of tail had nothing to do with the other injuries (thanks for small miracles?) but that the cat had certainly seen better days. He started washing off the dried blood and dirt which released a waterfall of puss that I never would have imagined could be held by such a small kitty. Worse part? Some of what I thought was congealed puss in the wound was not puss at all... it was part of the cat's pelvis that was showing through the mats of fur, dirt, and blood.

So, the little manx is going to be at the vet's awhile. They shot her full of painkillers and heavy duty antibiotics for her abscessed wounds. The vet had no clue how she could have gotten this bad or what could have caused it in the first place... but his best guesses for the size and severity of the wounds was that she got hit by a car or a dog got her. He said the wounds were not too terribly new so she was prolly living with them for a little while (a few days at least) before I spotted her.

I left a note on house of the man who supposedly owns the cat, explaining everything, in case he comes back. I told him what vet she's at, the number, and the condition I found her in.

One of the things that really kills me is that for the night I had this cat... she was so incredibly sweet and loving. She couldn't be around people for long enough and even though she was obviously very hurt, she wouldn't stop purring or trying to get close to me. Seemed really affection starved or... something. I don't know. The whole thing was very sad... and even though I can't find my own missing baby, I'm glad I could help another cat that really needed it.

My friend was complaining her cat always scratched them. This is a cat that is basically feral has a house outside in the garden but turns up maybe once every couple of weeks. It was semi-feral when they got it and I'm sure its really not used to humans. Now they're moving so are trying to get her to come back to go with them and can't understand why she keeps scratching them. I don't like outdoor cats anyway but when you never see the cat and then blame the cat for scratching you thats even worse

Im bothered that they seemed to make a point of saying "some quite valuable" like the monetary worth of an animal some enhances the heinousness of the crime (i saw this with the story about the french bulldogs being stolen a few months ago, where as the jack russell was "value unknown").  but if another crap breeding company goes out of business, more the better.

Quick update to the post about the coworker who Said she shot her cat with a bb gun.

Seems I wasn't the only one upset. She said today that she was threatened by another coworker. She explained that she really didn't use her actual bb gun on Moo (her cat) and that it was just a toy pellet gun with hollow plastic beads that she got at the dollar store but she just called it a bb gun because it was similar ("and it sounded cooler" her words).

I asked how she knew she wasn't hurting the cat and she said you can see the beads bounce off the cat's butt and it usually startled him enough that he jumps off.

A few of us managed to convince her to try hiding cans of pebbles in the tree to fall out and startle him when he jumps in. She also promised not to shoot at him again. Just in case, another coworker is going to try to get her address (we don't know it) so we can report her if she let's slip that she's done anything again. And since she loves to talk and brag we know she'll slip and tell if something happens.

Eta please forgive any errors. Typing this from a mobile.

My co-worker was telling me how they bought their Christmas tree over the weekend and that her cat refuses to stay out of the tree. I don't know anything about cats since I've never owned one so I suggested how about spritzing him with water when he tries to climb it.

Her wonderful response? "We tried that but it only deters him about five mins before he's trying again. We finally shot him with the bb gun and that works so much better. He waits at least half a day each time before trying again!"

WTF? She shoots her cat with a bb gun? I asked her if she was serious and she said she was. And that she was fed up with him climbing the tree and "if he doesn't learn then he'll keep getting shot in the ass".

What the hell, people...

My puppy is now 10 lbs plus - no T-Cup like I was told he was!

Be very careful where you purchase your puppy – please ask the right questions. Know the difference between a t-cup and small dog. Ask to see the mother and father of the puppy you plan to buy. Don’t end up like me with a puppy that was taken away too early from its mother so it would be small in size when it came time to sell – my puppy came home at 1 lb 7 oz and he grew very quickly. He is definitely not a t-cup like I was told he was. Our puppy is very happy and we do love him to pieces despite his size – no, I’m sorry he is not for sale.
All the best as you search for your new puppy to add to your family, it’s such an exciting time!

"Teacup" and other fiascoes aside, I have only one question for this poster--why didn't you ask those questions you are so adamant about?

ETA: And here is some bonus maybe your cat shouldn't have been let to wander as unfortunate as that whole affair sounds.

bonus funny )

"Hello, new to both herpkeeping and Livejournal here :)

Madam and Sir are my baby slider turtles, and I read I should be giving them some kind of calcium supplement along with their food. Can I use a human one, or does it have to be specially formulated for reptiles? Specifically, I've got a bottle of 21st Century Calcium Citrate + D, I was thinking I could crush a little and dust it over their food? The other ingredients are cellulose, stearic acid, croscarmellose sodium, magnesium silicate, and magnesium stearate... I don't know if that's anything dangerous for them or not?

Also, will worms dug up from the garden be okay for them, or should I just buy worms? We've used pesticides, so I wouldn't want the worms to eat something poisonous and then the turtles would get it!

I'm kind of paranoid about these little guys..."

Sigh.

Re: Which one will you be (Shelters charge too much)

Date: 2009-12-15, 7:09PM MST
Reply to: see below

Fact: Shelters charge too much.

Fact: Shelters, on average, want $95 for a cat and $150 for a dog.

Fact: If I'm going to have to pay that much for an older cat or dog, who may have been abandoned because of behavioral problems, I'm most likely going to spend a little more and get a puppy from a breeder.

Fact: Don't tell me about how much the shelters spend when they take in a stray, because it is supposed to be their mission to reduce the number of unwanted animals, and therefore, they should spay and neuter, and seek donations and grants to cover that cost.

Fact: The shelters continue to spend money every day housing and feeding the animal, so it just makes logical, financial sense to find a home as quickly as possible to reduce the daily upkeep spent by the shelter.

Fact: If the adoption fees were lower, more people would adopt. Period.

Now in Colorado all shelters and rescues have to speuter all animals (except mice, reptiles, rats ....) before they are adopted out. Also the donations part is so laughable seeing as the adoption cost is usually considered a donation and that one of the biggest shelters here has a yearly telethon on the local news to get donations (goes on all day)
I think its more like Fact: I do not think before writing.

Of course it is craigslist so there is usually a regular post from someone who just wants to make others mad.

There were too many bad things in this CL ad to keep track of. As I was reading it, I though of this site, it has stupid pet owner all over it.

http://buffalo.craigslist.org/pet/1511352876.html

here is the text in case it is removed at all-

have had so many hamsters growing up I can't even begin to count how many. Yes I know rats are not hamsters I am just showing that I am aware of their field and/or classification and needs.

I do not want a rat that will bite for I have had bad experiences with hamsters that bit.

I would prefer the rat came with a cage but will consider all options and responses.

I have bearded dragons (2) and an African fat tailed gecko I am looking to rehome (atleast one) before I buy a rat.

Bearded dragons and accessories and custom built cage is worth $800 atleast! Selling for $300 so if you're interested in them just add up how much your rat and accessories amount to and I will confirm it and deduct that amount from the price.

African fat tailed gecko, accessories and 20 gallon and cricket supplies is worth $200 ish, looking to sell for $100 so if you would like him the same goes for him as for the bearded dragons (price wise)

Unless you have $300 worth of rat supplies (which I doubt is possible lol) or possibly $100 worth we could do a flat out trade once I confirm how much each of ours is worth

wanna trade? Selling a rat? Interested? Email me!

Lizzards are super easy to take care of, all friendly and not squirmish at all!! Dragons just eat dead crickets, gecko eats live only.

Questions, pics, etc.. Email me and I will respond quickly. I promise.

Thanks!!

A mild but funny stupid.
I was at the low cost speuter clinic this morning dropping off a feral kitty for a spay.
We all have to fill out surgery request forms when we drop off the animals.

A guy comes in with two male cats. An aide hands him the forms to fill out.
He asks - what are these? She says the surgery request forms.
He says - I don't need these. The cats aren't getting surgery.
Aide asks if they are there for shots only. He says - no, they are getting their nuts cuts off. (his words, exactly) Aide tries to explain that, yes, that is surgery.
He's adamant that it's not. He keeps saying - But it's not surgery. Eventually they fill out the papers.

Good on him for getting the cats neutered but he's spo'ish for not springing for the Capstar treatment. $6 was too much to spend on *stupid* cats. They will be de-fleaed anyway because the clinic can't have fleas hanging around. Donations will pay for the treatments.

If you're in Central Florida and need this type of clinic, it's www.carescenter.com
